Meraz’s arm, Zimmerman’s bat lead Lady Patriots over Laughlin 10-2

BULLHEAD CITY — The Lady Patriots tallied six runs in their second inning to put away the visiting Laughlin High School Lady Cougars 10-2 at Mohave Accelerated Learning Center on Monday evening.

Freshman Tori Meraz, junior Payton Questal and sophomore Summer Zimmerman each had RBI in MALC’s big inning.

Meraz tripled home two runs in the second, also hit another triple and scored two runs.

Meraz also earned the complete-game victory in the circle.

She surrendered two runs on six hits, while striking out two and walking one in seven innings.

The Patriots scored 10 runs on 14 hits over six innings against Cougar pitching.

Zimmerman hit a second-inning home run, tripled, knocked in four runs and scored one run in four at-bats.

Questal, Zimmerman, and Meraz each racked up multiple hits for the Patriots. Questal and freshman Rylee Hoekstra each had three hits to lead MALC.

MALC also “tore up the base paths,” as two players stole at least two bases, Patriots head coach Shanda Weiler said.

Questal had four steals.

The Patriots scored six runs in the second inning, added two in the third, one in the fourth and one in the sixth, while the Cougars scored two runs in the fourth.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association 1A West Region Patriots’ record is 3-3 overall, 2-2 in conference and 2-1 in region, according to the softball rankings of aiaonline.org.

The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association 2A South League Cougars are 1-4 overall, 0-0 in league, according to MaxPreps.
