Charles and Diana Dine Together

April 30, 1993

LONDON (AP) _ Prince Charles went to dinner with his estranged wife, Diana, Thursday night for the second time this week.

They were guests of Portugal’s President Mario Soares and his wife, who are on a state visit. The dinner was held at the Portuguese Embassy.

As they walked towards the embassy’s banqueting room, the princess walked several steps behind her husband, but at the door he stopped and waited for her to catch up so they could enter together.

Charles and Diana separated in December.

Diana wore a full-length green dress for the function, which was also attended by Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip.

Earlier this week, the couple was among guests at a state banquet for the Soares at Buckingham Palace.

The princess, meanwhile, has received a female bodyguard for the first time.

Sgt. Carol Quirk became one of Diana’s four fulltime bodyguards on Wednesday, London newspapers reported.

She is reportedly proficient in judo and, like others royal bodyguards, was trained at the elite Special Air Service commando school in Hereford, England.

Quirk had a two-month trial with the princess before winning the permanent position.

The only other royal with a female bodyguard is Princess Anne, Queen Elizabeth’s daughter. Anne is guarded by Inspector Sheila Muston.
