Shaun Marsh to have surgery, out for 4 months

July 22, 2014

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Australia batsman Shaun Marsh will be sidelined for up to four months after undergoing surgery next week to repair a persistent elbow problem.

Marsh sustained the ligament injury while playing in the Indian Premier League and Cricket Australia physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said Tuesday the 31-year-old has a “pretty significant injury.”

Kountouris said most cricketers tend to cope with a short period of rest, Marsh’s injury is still a problem. “It’s a three or four month recovery period and we’ve chosen to go ahead with that, knowing the World Cup (starts in February, 2015).”

Marsh is expected to be fit for the opening match of the four-test series against India on Dec. 4.

Marsh was recalled to the test side for the tour of South Africa in February, top scoring with 148 in the opening match. He then made a pair of ducks in the second test and was dropped for Shane Watson in the series decider.
