Mo. Coach Retiring After 23 Years
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) _ After 23 years and 422 wins, Missouri women’s basketball coach Joann Rutherford has called it quits.
Rutherford is just the second coach of the women’s basketball team in Missouri history. The first, Alexis Jarrett, coached for only a year.
The height of Rutherford’s career came during the 1980s when the Tigers never had a losing season. From 1983-85, Missouri was ranked in the Top 20 for 37 consecutive weeks. Rutherford was named Big Eight Coach of the Decade.
In total, her teams won four Big Eight Conference championships and five conference tournament titles. But the last conference championship came in the 1989-90 season, and the last conference tournament title came in 1994 when the Tigers struggled to a 12-18 finish and were 3-11 in conference play.
The Tigers finished 11-16 overall this season and were last in the Big 12 at 3-13.
