Havasu pulls away in second half, tops Lee Williams, 34-14
The Lake Havasu football team started the season off right on Friday with a 34-14 win over Lee Williams in Kingman.
“It went kind of back and forth real early in the game,” Lake Havasu coach Karl Thompson said. “But we were really proud of how our guys executed all aspects of the game. We’re trying to find our identity. We’re trying to find what we’re good at. We got out of Kingman with the win, so hats off to the boys for their effort.”
The Knights lead the Volunteers 19-14 going into halftime thanks to a big first quarter.
Jacob Schafer scored Havasu’s first points of the season with a kickoff return in the first quarter.
Jonathan Perez missed the extra point attempt after Schafer’s touchdown but redeemed himself with his own receiving touchdown. On that ensuing extra point attempt, he buried the kick.
Schafer added two more receiving touchdowns in the second half to round out the Knights final score.
Junior Brace Spencer through all four touchdowns for Havasu as the offense kept the ball moving throughout the night. The Knights didn’t have to punt the ball in the entire game.
The defense recorded two interceptions.
Havasu is now 1-0 overall as they head into Flagstaff next Saturday to face 6A opponent Yuma Cibola at the Northern Arizona University’s Walkup Skydome.
“It’s going to be kind of the same thing it was (on Friday) since we have not seen Cibola in a couple of years,” Thompson said. “So we are looking forward to it and its pretty awesome to go back up the mountain to play at the Walkup Skydome. It’s always a good experience for the kids.”
