Company threatens to leave state over insulation ban

January 16, 2018

WEST WARWICK, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island insulation manufacturer says it may leave the state because of an ordinance that bans its products from Providence buildings.

Mike Murphy, president and CEO of Dryvit Inc., tells WPRI-TV his company will decide whether to leave the state within the next 24 months.

Located in West Warwick, Dryvit produces a type of insulation that helps make buildings more energy efficient. Murphy says the Providence city ordinance bans the insulation on the first floors of city buildings.

It’s unclear why the city enacted the ban, which Murphy says is unique to Rhode Island.

City Council President David Salvatore says officials may have passed the ban five years ago over concerns about the product’s durability.

Democratic Mayor Jorge Elorza says officials have no plans to review the regulation.
