Canadian Forces Major Receives Severe Reprimand

April 11, 1995

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) _ A Canadian military officer was severely reprimanded Tuesday for letting his peacekeeping soldiers drink at a Serb wedding in Bosnia last July.

A military panel ruled Monday that Maj. Ross Wickware, a 19-year veteran, was negligent to let his men drink while on duty.

Wickware must also forfeit one year of his seniority.

According to testimony at a court martial last week, Wickware was invited to the wedding last July and was asked to bring a security patrol because it was held less than a mile from Muslim lines.

The five-member panel said Wickware failed to enforce military regulations on alcohol, particularly those that prohibit drinking on duty and set an off-duty limit of two drinks per day for soldiers.

Other possible penalties included jail, dishonorable discharge or a demotion.

The panel cleared Wickware of charges he let his soldiers drive within eight hours of drinking.
