Derby PD releases details about pursuit of stolen car
DERBY — City cops have released more details following a pursuit of a stolen vehicle earlier this week.
Police said two teens were charged and two others each received a juvenile summons in connection with the incident.
Around 2:40 p.m. Thursday, Derby police spotted a car that had been stolen out of Fairfield Wednesday night. When officers tried to stop the car, a blue Volkswagen Passat, the driver fled and a pursuit began near Hawkins Street.
Police said the pursuit continued onto Roue 8 south and officers lost sight of the car as it got off Route 8 and headed into downtown Shelton.
Then, around 4 p.m., an off-duty Derby cop on his way home saw the same car on Main Street near Home Depot. Two Derby police officers were dispatched to the area and soon found the car on Route 34 east near its intersection with Gilbert Street.
Again, when officers tried to pull the car over, a pursuit ensued east on Route 34 into Orange.
“The Volkswagen ultimately stopped due to colliding with several vehicles on Route 34 in Orange near Race Brook Road,” Derby police officials said. “The stolen vehicles was occupied by four males, all of which fled the scene on foot immediately after the crash.”
Initial reports from police indicated that the driver remained at the site of the last crash.
“Derby police officers were able to catch the operator after he fled into a wooded area adjacent to Derby Avenue,” officials said. Police took him into custody and took him to Derby police headquarters.
Then, Woodbridge, Orange and West Haven police helped Derby police, aided by K9 units from Milford and East Haven police, searched the area to help with the accidents and search for the three other occupants from the car.
A West Haven police sergeant found the three near Race Brook Country Club near Saint John’s Drive. All three were detained and taken back to police headquarters in Derby.
The driver of the car, a 17-year-old from Derby, was charged with first-degree larceny, engaging officers in a pursuit, reckless driving, evading responsibility, interfering with police, operating a motor vehicle without a license and possession of narcotics.
The teen was in possession of four small bags of crack cocaine when officers took him into custody, police said.
One passenger, a 17-year-old from New Haven, was identified as the driver of the car that led police in the pursuit in Shelton. He was charged with first-degree larceny, engaging police in a pursuit and interfering with police.
The other two passengers, one 15 and the other 16, were each given a juvenile summons for interfering with police. Both teens are New Haven residents.
