Police pursuit of stolen car ends in fiery crash
FAIRFIELD, N.J. (AP) — A police pursuit involving a stolen car in northern New Jersey ended when the vehicle crashed and caught fire.
Fairfield police say the car’s owner reported around 2 a.m. Friday that someone had taken his house and car keys from the vehicle while it was parked on a street.
Believing the burglar would soon return to steal the vehicle, officers remained in the area. They saw someone drive off in the vehicle around 4:30 a.m. and tried to stop it, but the driver instead sped off.
The crash occurred a short time later. Authorities say the driver apparently was alone in the car and fled the scene on foot.
No injuries were reported in the chase or the crash.
