Idaho man charged with manslaughter in fatal shooting case

June 19, 2019

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — An eastern Idaho man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with what police said was an accidental shooting.

The Post Register reports 34-year-old Jose Antonio Ruiz-Juarez of Idaho Falls has not yet entered a plea.

Law enforcement officials say Ruiz-Juarez was testing a gun near an old training range when the shooting occurred May 14.

Twenty-three-year-old Michael Ephram, who was target shooting with family members a few hundred feet away, was shot once in the head and killed. Bullets also hit a car with a toddler and an infant inside, but the children were unharmed. Ephram’s wife and brother-in-law reportedly ran to where the gunfire was coming from to tell the shooter to stop.

Investigators with the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office said they believe it was unlikely that Ruiz-Juarez would have seen Ephram, his family, or the car from where he was shooting.

Ruiz-Juarez has not yet entered a plea.
