Blue Jays 6, Marlins 1
TORONTO (AP) _ Jose Cruz Jr. hit a tie-breaking two-run double and David Wells pitched his third complete game as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Florida Marlins 6-1 Saturday.
Florida reliever Brian Edmondson (3-4) started the eighth with the game tied 1-1 after replacing Alex Fernandez, who left because of a 100-pitch limit. After Homer Bush and Shannon Stewart hit consecutive singles, Jesus Sanchez came in to face Cruz, who doubled to left to give Toronto a 3-1 lead.
After hitting Shawn Green with a pitch, Sanchez gave up an RBI double to Carlos Delgado. He then walked Tony Fernandez intentionally, before Darrin Fletcher hit an RBI grounder. Tony Batista’s RBI infield single made it 6-1.
After allowing a double in the fourth, Wells (10-6) retired 15 straight, before Chris Clapinski singled in his first major league at-bat. Wells gave up just one run on six hits, struck out six and walked none.
Fernandez, recovering from rotator cuff surgery, allowed just one run on five hits in seven innings. He’s allowed just three earned runs in his last 21 innings.
Last Thursday, Fernandez, who may be traded before the July 31 trading deadline, said he expects to miss at least two weeks at some point during this season to rest his sore arm.
Mike Lowell’s sacrifice fly in the second drove in Danny Bautista for the Blue Jays’ lone run.
Notes: Green extended his hitting streak to a career-high 15 games. ... The Marlins are 1-5 at SkyDome. ... The complete game was the 34th of Wells’ career.
