Origins Of An Old Christian Tradition

December 30, 2018

Editor: After seeing an article in your paper the other day about the Jesse Tree and Advent (Dec. 11), I had received many phone calls asking me “what was the Jesse Tree?” I thought I would explain to everyone with a letter to the editor. A Jesse Tree is a very old Christian tradition that started in Medieval times. It was supposed to tell the story of the Bible from creation to the birth of Christ. The name comes from Jesse, who was the father of the great Jewish King David. A branch will come up from the stump of Jesse. A branch is a sign of new life and new beginnings. Jesus was a descendant of King David and Christians believe that Jesus is the new branch. Thank you to Citizens’ Voice staffers Leonarda Bilbow and Cristy Posten, who are very receptive to our articles. Alma M. Berlot NANTICOKE
