Texas Tech 87, So. Cal. 67
MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) _ Cheryl Swoopes scored 33 points and Krista Kirkland 26 as Texas Tech beat Southern California 87-67 Thursday night the NCAA West Regional semifinal.
Tech advanced to Saturday night’s regional final.
USC (22-7) controlled the opening tip and Kim Gessig hit a 15-footer just 13 seconds into the game. But it was another five minutes before the Women of Troy scored again.
In the meantime Texas Tech (28-3) went on a 16-0 run.
The Lady Raiders built a 40-20 lead before USC’s Joni Easterly hit a basket with 10 seconds left in the half.
USC put together a 10-0 run to pull to 48-40 when Tracy Atwater hit a 3- pointer with 13:30 left.
But Texas Tech called a timeout, stifled USC’s transition game and answered with a 12-0 run that included six of Swoopes.
Southern Cal fought back to 73-64 with under three minutes to play, but was forced to foul. Texas Tech made 12 of 13 free throws in the final 1:31 of the contest.
Noel Johnson added 11 points and Michi Atkins 10 for Texas Tech.
USC’s Lisa Leslie scored 15 points before fouling out. Nicki McCrimmon added 14 points and Gessig 11.
