GA soccer team tops Taft
Two goals from forward Katie Goldmsmith propelled the Greenwich Academy soccer team past Taft School, 3-2, in a matchup held Wednesday in Watertown.
With their third straight win and sixth in their last seven games, the Gators moved their record up to 6-3.
“It was a great win for us, the team played really well,” GA coach Alistair Lonsdale said. “Getting the win against a good team on the road on a wet, grass field was huge.”
With the score tied at 1-1, Goldsmith, a sophomore gave GA a 2-1 lead, converting a penalty kick late in the first half.
Greenwich Academy extended its advantage to 3-1 when Goldsmith tallied 15 minutes into the second half, after withstanding Taft’s pressure. Sophomore Margaret Maruszewski’s first-half goal tied the score at 1-1 for Greenwich Academy, which was also sparked by the strong play of junior forward Tessa Brooks, junior defender Christina Maldonado and sophomore goalie Ella Fugelsang.
Fugelsang made 10 saves in goal for the Gators, who host Hostchkiss School on Saturday at 4 p.m.
“Both teams had a lot of chances, but we dug in, fought hard and grabbed the victory,” Lonsdale said.
