August 9, 2018

NIOBRARA - A celebration of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska’s culture, heritage, and tradition will be this weekend.

It’s the tribe’s 25th anniversary Pow Wow that will feature a variety of dancers, drum groups, and vendors.

The event will have Grand Entries each day of the Pow Wow, a Chief Standing Bear statue unveiling, horseshoe tournament, and diabetes fun run.

Historic Preservation Officer Shannon Wright says there are other dances besides the Grand Entries throughout the weekend.

“They’ll do inter-tribal dances we do have some competition style games that we do. We also have a potato dance where you’ll have two dancers put a potato between their foreheads and they have to perform certain dance maneuvers without dropping the potato. We also do a switch dance where a gentleman will put on a girls regalia and a lady will put on a guys regalia and they will attempt to do that dance that they do.”

Wright says admission to all of the events is free.

Grand entries are scheduled for Friday at 7, Saturday at 1 and 7, and Sunday at 1.
