County Christmas Tree Lighted With Music And Good Cheer
WILKES-BARRE — More than 6,000 holiday lights sparkled all at once as the Luzerne County Christmas tree was lighted Thursday evening in the rotunda of the county courthouse.
The tree-lighting ceremony featured musical performances by Dave Rescavage, the Holy Redeemer High School handbell choir, the Wyoming Valley West Middle School Spartan Singers and Beyond Harmony, an a capella group from Misericordia University.
Benjamin Harned, son of Barbara Harned, executive secretary to county Judge Tina Gartley, lighted the tree.
Rabbi Roger Lerner, of Temple B’nai B’rith, lighted a Hanukkah menorah.
This year’s holiday tree came from Helen and Ed’s Tree Farm, in Dorrance Twp., county Manager David Pedri said. It was “born and raised in Luzerne County, like so many of us in this room,” Pedri told a standing-room-only crowd that filled the rotunda.
County employees Jennifer Thomas and Sandy Shaw decorated the tree, Pedri said. Longtime county employee Mark Krakowski, famed as the keeper of the county Christmas tree for more than a decade, retired earlier this year.
