Police: Deadly turnpike crash after cat rescue bid
MIAMI (AP) — Authorities say the man struck by a car on the Florida Turnpike as he tried to rescue a cat remains in critical condition in the hospital.
The Florida Highway Patrol says 35-year-old Michael James Schneider is being treated at Broward Health North Medical Center. The driver of the car was identified Tuesday as 75-year-old Mary Jane Alston. FHP says she died at the hospital.
FHP says Schneider was driving Monday afternoon on the Turnpike in Broward County when he noticed the cat. He stopped and parked by the roadway to walk toward it.
The FHP report says Schneider was then hit by the car. Alston went off the road with Schneider on the hood before hitting his car and a guardrail, tossing him to the shoulder.
The cat later died.
