Fairland shuts downs Portsmouth 49-30

ROME TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Fairland (6-4 overall, 3-1 Ohio Valley Conference) used strong defense to shut down Portsmouth in a 49-30 victory Tuesday night at the Carl York Center.

The Dragons led 12-7 after one quarter, 22-13 at halftime and 32-18 after three quarters.

Ian Chinn and Jacob Polcyn led Fairland with 10 points each. Danny Lattimore paced the Trojans (5-5,1-3) with 13 points.

The Dragons return to action at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Gallia Academy, which is tied with Fair-land and Ironton for the OVC lead. Portsmouth entertains Rock Hill at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Doug Nester scored 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. C.J. Meredith scored 11 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked six shots. Nate Ellis scored 10 points. Graeson Malashevich issued nine assists. St. Albans was led by Rodney Toler and Braxton Good with 13 points each. Ethan Clay scored 12.

MORGAN COUNTY 75, GREENUP COUNTY 60: Blake Evans scored 27 points and the Cougars triumphed over the Musketeers. Brady Nelson led Greenup County with 22 points.

BOYD COUNTY 88, ROSE HILL CHRISTIAN 53: Blake Stewart led the Lions with 20 points in a win over the Royals. Talbott Taylor scored 17, Landon Meade 14 and Austin Gibbs 10 as 11 Boyd County players scored.

CALVARY CHRISTIAN 67, GRACE CHRISTIAN 55: Isaac Massie scored 27 points and Scotty Parsons 23 as the Patriots defeated the Soldiers. Luke Pauley scored 13. Eli Foster led Grace Christian with 26 points. Ricky Tanner scored 11 and Cooper Branson 10.

The Soldiers are 7-3 and Calvary Baptist from Hurricane is 9-4.

COAL GROVE 50, IRONTON 45: Addi Dillow scored 17 as the Hornets overcame an early deficit to defeat the Fighting Tigers in an Ohio Valley Conference game at Ironton’s Conley Center. Destiny Dolen and Bailey McKnight scored 11 each for Coal Grove (9-2 overall, 5-1 OVC). Riley Schreck led Ironton (4-7, 4-3) with 17 points.

SYMMES VALLEY 52, IRONTON ST. JOE 24: The Vikings outscored the Flyers 21-1 in the fourth quarter to improve to 7-3. Taylor Sells scored 21 and grabbed 12 rebounds for Symmes Valley. Rachael Hayes scored 10. Kaitlyn Sheridan paced the Flyers (5-7) with nine points. Bella Whaley snagged 12 rebounds.

SOUTH GALLIA 42, TRIMBLE 40: Amaya Howell sank a game-winning 3-pointer with 4 seconds to play to rally the Rebels (5-9 overall, 3-5 Tri-Valley Conference) from a nine-point deficit in a triumph over the Tomcats (3-10, 2-6) in Glouster, Ohio. Jessie Rutt led South Gallia with 20 points and assisted on the Howell’s winning basket. Howell scored 10. Brianna Osborne led Trimble with 12 points.

WATERFORD 53, WAHAMA 33: Rachael Adams scored 14 to help the Wildcats (8-1 overall, 8-0 TVC) by the White Falcons (5-4, 4-4) in Mason, West Virginia. Mackenzie Suprano scored 10. Hannah Rose paced Wahama with 10 points.

VINTON COUNTY 80, WHEELERSBURG 39: The Vikings (11-0) set a school record with 14 3-pointers in a victory over the Pirates (9-3) in MacArthur, Ohio. Morgan Bentley scored 17, snared 12 rebounds and issued 12 assists for Vinton County. Tegan Bartoe scored 23 and Cameron Zinn 20. Kaylee Darnell led Wheelersburg with 16 points. PORTSMOUTH 51, GALLIA ACADEMY 40: Nia Trinidad scored 17, Hannah Hughes 16 and Jasmine Eley 14 as the Trojans (7-6) won their fifth consecutive game, defeating the Blue Angels.

PAINTSVILLE 55, LAWRENCE Co. 50: Elizabeth Williams scored 27 as the Tigers (12-2) topped the Bulldogs (11-4) in Paintsville, Kentucky. Katelyn Newsome added 10 points. Kensley Fewltner lead Lawrence County with 15 points. Kelly Davis and Alexis Ratliff each scored 11.

LINCOLN COUNTY 74, LOGAN 63: The Panthers (5-4) weathered a 34-point fourth quarter from the Wildcats (7-3) to win. Carly McComas scored 19 and Gracie Brumfield added 17 for Lincoln County, while Peyton Ilderton scored a game-high 22 for Logan.
