Limits on plastic straws, bags pass New Hampshire House

March 19, 2019

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Plastic would be less plentiful when it comes to both sipping and shopping in New Hampshire under two bills passed by House lawmakers.

The House voted Tuesday to prohibit restaurants from providing plastic straws to customers unless customers specifically request them. It also passed a bill to prohibit stores with more than 1,000 square feet of retail space from providing plastic carryout bags to customers.

Supporters of the measures emphasized the harm plastic causes to wildlife and the environment. Opponents portrayed them as over-the-top government intrusions.

Both bills now go to the Senate.
