Officer shoots suspected carjacker following brief chase
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — A police officer and a suspected carjacker both received minor injuries during an exchange of gunfire.
Lakeland police spokesman Gary Gross said in a news release that the shooting happened early Thursday following a brief pursuit.
Gross said 28-year-old Terrese Colston threatened a driver with a gun and took his vehicle on Wednesday night. Officer Alexander Rethwisch saw the vehicle and began following it. It hit a curb, blew out a tire and ended up in a grassy area. Colston got out and ran.
The report says as the officer followed, Colston turned and fired two shots. Rethwisch returned fire, hitting Colston in the leg. Rethwisch was hit with shrapnel.
Both were treated for injuries.
Colston is charged with numerous felonies. Jail records don’t list a lawyer.
