Soldier Kills Palestinian, Settler Ordered Held In Prisoner Death
JERUSALEM (AP) _ Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian today after he stabbed and slightly wounded a soldier in Gaza City, the army and the state-owned radio reported.
It was the latest in escalating Israeli-Arab violence that has killed at least 23 Palestinians and eight Israelis since the start of March.
Six of the Palestinian victims have been 12 years old or younger.
Also today, a Jerusalem Magistrates Court ordered a Jewish settler held for 10 days on allegations he fatally shot a Palestinian man who had been bound hand and foot by other settlers. The settlers said the victim had knifed one of them.
Yoram Skolnick, 30, of the settlement of Maale Hever in the occupied West Bank, told police he shot the man ″because the Arabs have to be taught a lesson,″ army radio reported.
Skolnick is accused of firing at least eight bullets from a submachine gun into the back of Moussa Abu Sabha, 21, from the nearby village of Yatta, on Tuesday.
Moshe Mizrahi, deputy commander of the Hebron area police, told army radio that police were seeking murder charges against Skolnick.
The shooting occurred after Jewish settlers detained Abu Sabha, saying they were suspicious of his conduct, and he had drawn a knife and slightly injured one of them. Reports said he had a grenade but it was taken away before Skolnick fired.
In today’s killing, the army said two Palestinian bystanders were wounded in the gunfire. One of them, a woman, was in serious condition, it said.
Arab reports identified the dead man as Hazem Abdul Rahim al-Mozayen, 22, from the Gaza village of Beit Lahia.
State radio said the man stabbed a soldier guarding Palestinian families visiting jailed relatives.
Two other deaths were reported today:
-Bassam Mohammed Salhe, 10, of the Nusseirat refugee camp in the occupied Gaza Strip, died Wednesday, two days after he was shot in the head by Israeli troops in a stone-throwing clash in the camp.
-Akram Musleh El-Shaher, 22, of the Gaza’s Khan Yunis refugee camp died Wednesday of a bullet wound suffered in a clash with army troops in June 1989, his family said.
The deaths raised to 1,069 the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli soldiers or civilians since the start of the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation in December 1987.
An additional 712 Palestinians have been killed by fellow Arabs, most on suspicion of collaboration. At least 126 Israelis have died in the violence.
