SYDNEY (AP) — Reigning Asian club champion Western Sydney has extended the contract of coach Tony Popovic to the end of the 2017-18 season despite a disappointing A-League campaign.
Popovic, the Asian confederation’s coach of the year and former Crystal Palace captain, led the Wanderers to a runners-up finish in their inaugural 2012-13 A-League season and again the following year.
In November the club won the Asian Champions League title, beating Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal.
Western Sydney, however, followed that with a disappointing domestic season, finishing in ninth place in the 10-team league with just four wins and six draws in 27 matches.
Wanderers chairman Paul Lederer said Friday that “make no mistake ... Tony Popovic is the only man for the job.”
