The Houston Choral Societyheralds the holiday season with ‘A Glorious Christmas’

November 27, 2018

The Houston Choral Society’s Christmas concert is always an audience favorite and has become an annual tradition for hundreds of Houston families.

This year, HCS presents “A Glorious Christmas” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at The Foundry Church. Under the direction of Dr. Kevin M. Klotz, HCS Artistic Director, this concert promises to once again help you start off the Christmas season in a joyful mood.

This concert features traditional and new settings of favorite Christmas carols including “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” O Holy Night,” “Ding! Dong! Merrily on High” and “Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas” from Home Alone 2. HCS soloists for this concert are sopranos Adriene Bible and Katie Vargo-Gravesmill.

Highlights for this program include two arrangements by Rando Bass, “Gloria” and “Christmas Flourish,” set for brass quintet, percussion and organ. Accomplished composer, arranger, conductor, and performer Randol Alan Bass created “Christmas Flourish” for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Bass described this work as having a “jolly energy.” In this work he takes familiar carols and gives them an energetic and powerful style.

A fitting finale for this concert is Handel’s “Hallelujah” chorus, also referred to simply as “The Hallelujah Chorus” because of its great popularity throughout history. This majestic piece proclaims the triumph of Christ. Drawing on verses found in Revelation 11 and 19, the chorus boldly proclaims “Hallelujah! for the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth. The kingdom of this world is become the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He shall reign forever and ever.”

The Houston Choral Society is pleased to collaborate on this concert with the Strake Jesuit and St. Agnes Double Triple Trios. There will also be audience caroling and a special visit by Santa Claus. This concert is perfect way to bring in the Christmas season for the entire family.

Ticket prices are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors/students/veterans, and $10 for children ages 5 and younger. Group rates are available. Tickets are available online at www.houstonchoral.org. Tickets may also be purchased at the door. The Foundry Church is one of the premiere choral venues in Houston with extraordinary acoustics. It is located in northwest Houston at 8350 Jones Road, Houston, TX 77065 with easy access from Highway 290.
