Shadoski pushes Lakeside past Martin Luther

December 31, 2018

LAKE MILLS — Lakeside Lutheran senior guard Kaitlyn Shadoski scored 11 of the team’s last 13 points and hit two free throws with 1 minute, 9 seconds remaining in overtime to give the host Warriors a 62-60 victory over Division 3 10th-ranked Greendale Martin Luther in a Lake Mills Classic game Friday.

Shadoski made a long jumper with 1:10 left in regulation to give Lakeside (5-3) a 56-54 advantage. Martin Luther’s Sydney Burris made two free throws with 10 seconds remaining to square things up at 56. The Warriors’ Kaylee Raymond got a clean look at a mid-range jumper as time expired but couldn’t connect.

Shadoski finished with 20 points and shot 6 for 7 from the free throw line. Lakeside’s Mia Murray added nine points and Hannah Willems totaled eight.

In overtime, Willems scored a layup off a Shadoski assist to start the scoring. Shadoski hit a spinning layup in the lane to give Lakeside a 60-57 advantage with 2:25 left.

After Martin Luther’s Marissa Brick hit 1 of 2 from the line Bonnie Jensen sank two free throws to tie the game at 60 with 1:16 to play.

Shadoski got fouled on Lakeside’s next possession and hit both shots from the charity stripe to put the Warriors ahead for good at 62-60 with 1:09 left.

Greendale Martin Luther’s Emma Kallas couldn’t handle a pass on the other end that resulted in a turnover and Jensen missed a 3-pointer from the right wing in the closing seconds that would have won it for the Spartans.

“It was nice to see Kaitlyn step up leadership wise,” Lakeside Lutheran head coach Tim Matthies said. “She was key in getting us to attack the basket instead of just working around the perimeter. Her free throws were pretty clutch too.”

Martin Luther (8-2) had the game’s largest advantage at 14-4 with 10:20 to go in the first half. Lakeside chipped away at the lead with 10 players registering points in a back-and-forth game.

“Overall, this is a huge step forward for the team,” Matthies said. “Everybody contributed today. Brynn McDermott hit a 3 and Ryann Burger had a backdoor cut that she nailed a basket on. This is just a tremendous step forward for the entire team.”

In the second half, Martin Luther used a 1-3-1 defensive look that Lakeside had seen earlier in the year against New Berlin West. The Warriors were able to keep the ball moving on offense and Kaylee Raymond hit a 3-pointer to cut the Spartan lead to two with 8:30 left in regulation.

Lakeside trailed 52-51 with 3:27 left before Shadoski was fouled on a 3-point shot and made all three free throw attempts.

“In the first part of our season we have always played hard,” Matthies said. “We talked about playing a little tougher along with playing with all the effort. We were still a little sluggish in the first couple minutes but then after that it was a good, tough battle against a high-quality opponent.”

Murray sparked the Warriors in the first half with seven points including a 3-pointer that tied the game at 14. Murray’s shot was followed by a Lily Schuetz layup that capped a 12-0 Lakeside run in the middle of the first half that gave the team its first lead of the game at 16-14.

Murray, a sophomore guard, then hit a floater and running layin in the final three minutes of the half to close Lakeside to within two points at halftime.

“She’s a no fear kid that gets in the middle and goes to the basket with confidence and got the ball to drop,” Matthies said.

A day after scoring 24 points Martin Luther’s Kallas managed only five. Jensen scored 21 points and Vanessa Solano notched 20 to pick up the slack for a team that can score in many ways.

“Kallas is a tremendous player,” Matthies said. “They had three strong offensive weapons and can shoot the ball … Lots of good challenges for the defense.”

Cody and Schuetz each scored six points for Lakeside.
