Japan PM to lead Tokyo delegation to Buenos Aires
TOKYO (AP) — Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will lead Tokyo’s bid delegation to Buenos Aires for next month’s vote on the host city of the 2020 Olympics.
Abe confirmed Friday that he will go to Argentina for the Sept. 7 vote of the International Olympic Committee.
Tokyo is competing against Istanbul and Madrid.
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan are also expected to be in Buenos Aires for the vote.
Abe spoke to more than 800 bid supporters at the official send-off ceremony for members of the bid.
He says he is “hopeful” that Tokyo will win and “I will go to Buenos Aires as well.”
Tokyo goes into the final days of the campaign facing concern over a leak of highly radioactive water at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant.
