NEW YORK (AP) _ Miroslav Satan scored three goals for his third career hat trick Friday night to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 4-1 victory over the New York Rangers.

Martin Biron made 32 saves and Dmitri Kalinin added a goal for the Sabres, who beat the Rangers for the first time in five games (3-0-2), dating to March 14, 2001.

Eric Lindros scored for New York. Goaltender Dan Blackburn, starting his 15th straight game in place of Mike Richter (concussion), gave up three goals, including two in the second period, as the Rangers lost for the second time in as many nights.

The Sabres scored two goals in a 58-second span in the second period. Satan, who scored a power-play goal in the first period, scored his second after a rough exchange, flipping a shot above Blackburn’s stick. Kalinin scored just 58 seconds later.

New York had its chances in the final period but failed to score after Lindros had a shot blocked, Mark Messier shot wide, and an open Darius Kasparaitis missed on a nifty behind-the-net pass from Lindros.

The Rangers pulled their goalie for much of the last five minutes, and Satan scored his third goal of the game and eighth of the season into an empty net with 2:20 left.

After Lindros scored on a pass from Vladimir Malakhov, the Rangers nearly scored again less than a minute later, but the power play ended when Bobby Holik got caught up in a skirmish behind the net and was whistled for hooking.

Buffalo’s Jean-Pierre Dumont was called for slashing with less than a minute left in the period, but New York’s Tom Pote was whistled for roughing, and the Sabres remained on the power play.

Satan then tied the game with 22 seconds left in the period, scoring on a slap shot over Blackburn’s glove.
