ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) _ Tampa Bay Devil Rays pitcher Wilson Alvarez underwent season-ending arthroscopic shoulder surgery Thursday.

Alvarez, who signed a five-year, $35 million free agent deal in December 1997 had a partially torn left rotator cuff repaired by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala.

Alvarez has not pitched his season. He has a 15-23 record with Tampa Bay in 53 starts.

A team spokesman said Alvarez should be ready by next spring training.

Another injured Tampa Bay starting pitcher, Juan Guzman, threw four innings Thursday in an extended spring training game. Guzman, on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis, could return next month.
