PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Former heavyweight champion Joe Frazier was arrested Friday and accused of assaulting a woman.

Frazier was taken into custody and was to be charged with simple assault and reckless endangerment, police spokeswoman Maria Ibrahim said. He was in jail awaiting arraignment.

The victim was described by police as the mother of Frazier's son. Authorities gave no further description of the woman, who refused medical treatment.

The 60-year-old Frazier was a champion in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He fought Muhammad Ali in three classic heavyweight bouts, winning once and losing twice.

A woman answering the phone at Frazier's gym referred calls to lawyer Gene Bonner, who did not immediately return a message.

No one answered the door at the home where Frazier was arrested.
