Two cars trapped on Old Beaumont Highway bridge
A microburst Friday afternoon shortly after 5 p.m. snapped a light pole that fell across a bridge in the 19500 block of Old Beaumont Highway in northeast Harris County trapping two vehicles.
The roadway was closed both ways on Old Beaumont Highway between Sheldon and Crosby causing a massive backup on new US 90 where traffic was being rerouted.
No one was injured in the mishap and crews are expected to be on the scene for the next two hours clearing the downed power lines and pole.
The pole fell completely across the roadway blocking a small Chevrolet vehicle with two people inside and a pickup truck with the driver behind them.
Neither can move because the wet road was electrified by the live power lines.
“They received a shock when they drove over the bridge and are blocked by the power pole and live wires on the bridge,” said Sgt. Custer with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
The 911 call was made shortly after 5 p.m. and CenterPoint crews were on the scene about 30 minutes later working to move the pole and the power lines.
Crews approached the bridge carefully to affect rescue safely.
“We don’t want them to reverse until the power is cut off,” Custer said, “so they are going to have to sit tight until that happens.”
