HAMPTON, Ark. (AP) _ A small fishing boat overturned in the swollen waters of Champagnolle Creek on Friday, drowning three women, authorities said.

A teen-age boy who was aboard the boat, Chris Williams of Hampton, swam to shore and sought help, but his mother and two other women who were visiting for the holiday weekend drowned, said Calhoun County Coroner Stony Freemyer.

The creek was six feet above its normal level, he said.

''The water was rising, there was a pretty good current and they just couldn't make it to the bank, I guess,'' he said.

River and lake levels in southern Arkansas have been high since storms resulting from Hurricane Bonnie dumped more than 9 inches of rain over parts of the area in one 24-hour period last week.

Freemyer identified the victims as Angela Williams, 42, Cecile Mae Horner, 43, and Mae Britt, 34, both of Chicago.
