Rice Owls down MU women’s soccer

HUNTINGTON - Rice University built a two-goal lead before defeating Marshall University, 2-1, in a Friday night Conference USA women’s soccer match at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.

Goals by Erin Mikeska and Annie Walker put the Owls (5-7-0, 3-3-0) ahead. Lianne Mananquil assisted on both scores. Marah Abu-Tayeh’s eighth goal this season from an assist by her sister Farah Abu-Tayeh. put Marshall (5-7-2, 3-4-0) on the board.

Both goalkeepers - Bella Killgore for Rice and Megan Bonelli for Marshall - made four saves.

North Texas visits Marshall for a noon Sunday match.

HUNTINGTON - West Virginia University leads Marshall by 475.5 to 358.5 after Friday’s events in the West Virginia Games women’s swimming and diving meet in Fitch Natatorium at Cam Henderson Center.

Session two begins at 10 a.m. Saturday.


LYNCHBURG, Va. - Victoria Walter and Liz Stefancic from Marshall advanced to the 64-player main singles draw at the ITA Atlantic Regional women’s tennis tournament Friday with qualifying match victories.

Walter defeated the top qualifying seed, Annie Sophie Courteau from West Virginia University, in the first round, 7-5, 6-2, and beat Sophia Sualehe from VCU in round two, 6-4, 6-1. Stefancic downed Paula Goetz from WVU, 6-2, 6-2, and beat Rebekah Anderson from Liberty University, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Marshall doubles partners Anna Smith and Stefancic moved into the round of 32 with an 8-5 win against Drousile Dzeubou and Malin Falk from Radford University.

The tournament continues daily through Tuesday.

Cross country

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. - Marshall cross country completed the regular season Friday at the VertCross Invitational hosted by High Point University. Marshall placed fifth and the women’s team was 10th in the 18-team meet.

Alex Minor was 12th in the men’s 8K with a time of 25:56.77. Madelyn Garrison led the Thundering Herd women’s team in a 5K race with a 45th-place time of 19:54.26.

The Conference USA Championship meet is Oct. 27 in Boca Raton, Florida.

Men’s soccer

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Marshall faces the No. 5-ranked Kentucky Wildcats in a 7 p.m. Saturday men’s soccer match at the Wendell and Vickie Bell Soccer Complex. The match is an SEC Network+ broadcast.

Marshall’s season record is 4-5-2 and the Thundering Herd is 1-1-1 in Conference USA. Kentucky, 9-1-1 overall, is 3-1-0 in conference action.
