Wintry weather returns to area Wednesday
BULLHEAD CITY — Much of the Southwest has been placed under a winter storm watch as another system bringing snow, ice and rain to the region approaches.
The National Weather Service in Las Vegas on Tuesday issued a winter storm warning for most of Mohave and Lincoln counties in northwestern Arizona and southeastern Nevada, while a winter weather advisory was in place for Clark County in southern Nevada, including the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Laughlin and Las Vegas as well as eastern San Bernardino County in California.
According to the NWS, the “period of concern” is from 6 p.m. today to 4 a.m. Friday.
During that period, the NWS said at a Tuesday briefing on the impending conditions, the following can be expected:
“Hazardous travel conditions due to slick, snow-covered roads on sections of Interstate 40; areas of low visibility due to snow; areas of black ice possible, particularly on elevated road surfaces; road closures or chain restrictions due to snowfall.”
Heavy snow is forecast east of Kingman with 4 to 8 inches possible; as much as a foot of snow is expected at higher elevations.
“I-40 east of Kingman will be impacted (by) significant snow,” the weather service said.
In its advisory, the NWS said the next storm will be “slightly colder, more vigorous and slower moving than the system this past Sunday.”
“Cold air already in place ahead of the storm will lead to the potential for snow and ice to accumulate on more roads in the Las Vegas Valley (on) Wednesday night and Thursday.”
In addition to possible travel issues on I-40 east of Kingman, travel could be hazardous on I-15 between Baker, California, and Mesquite, Nevada, on the Nevada-Arizona border.
In the Bullhead City area, the forecast doesn’t call for snow, but rain is likely tonight, Thursday and into Friday, according to the NWS.
Snow is in the forecast for Las Vegas — with 1 to 2 inches possible tonight and Thursday — and portions of the Lake Mead NRA, which will have the possibility of a winter mix of rain, ice and snow tonight and Thursday.
High winds are expected in San Bernardino County today with rain or rain mixed with snow likely in many locations, such as Barstow and Twentynine Palms, on Thursday. A wind advisory is in place for today in the Mojave Desert in California.
Locally, the forecast called for a high around 50 today, then rain moving in during the evening with an overnight low near 40. On Thursday, showers are expected most of the day with a high around 53 and a low in the mid-30s. The rain is expected to move out of the area Friday with a forecast high of around 50 degrees. Temperatures are expected to warm into the mid- to upper-50s by Sunday.
