WASHINGTON (AP) _ Tony Amonte's second goal of the game broke a tie with 3:46 left in the third period as the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Washington Capitals 4-2 Monday night to extend their winning streak to a season-high four games.

With the Blackhawks on a power play, Amonte took Anders Eriksson's pass deep in the right circle and beat goaltender Olaf Kolzig over the left shoulder for his 42nd goal.

Eric Daze and Alexei Zhamnov also scored for the Blackhawks, who broke a five-game winless streak on the road (0-3-2). Chicago has won six of seven games.

Benoit Gratton scored twice for Washington, which finished 16-22-2 at the MCI Center, their worst home mark and first sub.-500 home record since going 16-17-7 in 1980-81. Washington's 16 victories were the fewest home triumphs since a 15-win campaign in 1978-79.

The Blackhawks wound up an equally disappointing road season with a 9-24-8 record, their worst showing since a 9-24-7 mark in 1987-88.

Gratton gave the Capitals a 1-0 lead 1:43 into the game with an unassisted goal after intercepting a clearing pass. Chicago tied it on Daze's 22nd, a wrist shot that sailed past Kolzig from the right circle on the Blackhawks' second shot of the game at 10:08.

Amonte and Gratton scored goals 1:11 apart midway through the second for a 2-2 tie. Amonte's 41st capped a spurt that saw the Capitals outshot 17-2 following Gratton's first goal.

Immediately after Washington fouled up a 3-on-1 rush, Amonte skated down the right wing and stuffed the puck in at the right post at 10:10. Gratton whacked in Bellows' rebound, despite being tackled from behind by Brown.

Zhamnov scored an empty-net goal with 31 seconds left.
