Elway Agent: He’ll Be Back in 1998
DENVER (AP) _ John Elway plans to return for the 1998 season as ``king of the hill″ and help the Denver Broncos defend their Super Bowl title, his agent said.
In the past Elway has told the team, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen and coach Mike Shanahan that he will take it one year at a time, Marvin Demoff said. The quarterback has now decided he’ll return for at least one more season, the agent said.
``He might end up renewing that lease after next season, but right now he’s giving them a year’s notice,″ Demoff told The Denver Post.
``It fulfills his obligation to Pat to help him get a new stadium. It fulfills his obligation to Mike to get someone in place. And it allows John to tour the NFL at least one more season as the king of the hill, which is exactly what he is,″ he said.
Team spokesman Jim Saccomano said today that the team has yet to hear from Elway himself.
``In time, John is going to let us know when John lets us know,″ he said. ``It’s certainly very well known we love our quarterback, and want him to return.″
Elway, who had said before the Super Bowl that he wasn’t sure if he’d be back next season, declined comment after returning from the Pro Bowl in Hawaii this week.
