Meijer considering La Porte location
La PORTE — News of Meijer potentially moving into La Porte was received at City Hall during Wednesday’s Redevelopment Commission meeting.
The commission was presented a real estate option contract for the supermarket chain to construct a new building in the NewPorte Landing area of the city.
The commission was responsible for voting on whether or not to accept the option contract. Laura Konieczny, president of the Redevelopment Commission, assured the commission members, “the City Attorney has reviewed it, in conjunction with the whole staff.”
The option contract was unanimously approved by the Redevelopment Commission.
The city is expecting Meijer to come to a decision on whether or not they want to move forward with the La Porte location within the next 12 months.
La Porte City Councilman Timothy Stabosz was present at the meeting and available for comment.
“I, frankly, am a bit surprised. I wasn’t sure that we had the disposable income here in La Porte to support something so large,” Stabosz said. “To my understanding, it’s supposed to be about the size of the Michigan City Meijer. I think it would be a huge shot in the arm for the City of La Porte, and it’s very exciting.”
