Virginia Tech 60, No. 18 Southern Miss. 59
BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) _ Lisa Leftwich scored 18 points, including a layup with 42 seconds left, to lead Virginia Tech to a 60-59 victory Monday night over No. 18 Southern Mississippi.
The last time the Hokies beat a ranked team was the 1988-89 season, when they downed then-No. 13 South Carolina.
Trailing 60-59, Southern Mississippi had a chance to win when they got the ball back with 15 seconds left. They moved the ball upcourt and found Termekia Buchanan under the basket. Her shot with three seconds left rolled out. Virginia Tech’s Jenny Root grabbed the rebound and the Hokies ran out the clock.
The Hokies (20-5, 8-3 Metro Conference) led 54-42 with 8:09 remaining, when Southern Mississippi (21-3, 9-2) went on a 14-2 run to tie the score at 56-56 with 1:50 left.
Sue Logsdon hit a 15-foot jumper from the right side and Leftwich drove the lane to give the Hokies a 60-56 lead with 42 seconds left. Southern Mississippi got a free throw from Tanya Bullock and a basket inside by Janice Felder to cut the margin to 60-59 with 23 seconds left.
Root had 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Hokies, and Cynthia Lee added 10 points.
Felder led Southern Mississippi with 17 points and eight rebounds. Buchanan had 11 points and Bullock 10.
