Vermont 80, Yale 72

BURLINGTON (AP) _ Junior Erik Nelson scored 16 points, 19 rebounds and seven blocked shots as the Catamounts won an 80-72 victory over Yale University in double overtime Monday.

Vermont is now 6-2 overall, while the Eli fall to 5-4.

The Catamounts led, 32-21, at the half. But Yale came back with a 9-1 run at the start of the second half that cut Vermont’s lead to 33-30.

The Cats held on, taking a 50-43 lead at 8:15 on an inside shot from Craig Peper.

Yale came back again, with Daniel Okonkwo scoring 12 of his 17 points in the final 10 minutes before fouling out with 44 seconds remaining. Spencer Eisenmenger’s drive off glass with 2:08 left gave Vermont a 56-50 lead, which the Eli cut into with a basket by Okonkwo and a Jim Rosneck shot inside.

Vermont’s Jared Steele missed the front end of a one-and-one with 44 seconds left, and Yale’s Gabe Hunterton hit two foul shots with 42 seconds left to tie the game at 56-56.

In the first overtime, Vermont led by three late before Hunterton hit a three-pointer from the right side with 17 seconds left to tie the game 64-64 and send it to a second overtime.

Then Nelson hit four foul shots and Eisenmenger added two to give Vermont a 72-66 lead with 2:24 left. Nelson’s dunk inside from Roach with 1:16 left made it 74-66, and the Cats held on from there.

Eisenmenger led all scorers for Vermont with 22, including three three-pointers. Craig Peper added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Cats, while Chotkowski had six points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

Yale was led by Hunterton’s 19. Okonkwo finished with 17 points and eight boards, while Rosneck finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.
