HAMLIN TOWNSHIP — Emergency crews were dispatched to a reported vehicle in the water, which had burned with an elderly man sitting on a bench nearby who appeared confused.

Responding units found an SUV-type vehicle partly in the water destroyed by fire.

The Mason County Sheriff’s Office stated that the crash is believed to have taken place sometime late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, after the driver — an elderly Mason County man — became confused while driving on a paved trail within the Ludington State Park.

The vehicle ended up in the river near the boat launch. The driver was admitted to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital for hypothermia, the release stated.
