Busch Wins, Sets Up Big Showdown

November 12, 2018

Kyle Busch won for the eighth time this season to tie Kevin Harvick for the most victories this season and set up a head-to-head battle for the championship.

Busch’s victory at ISM Raceway outside of Phoenix was the final qualifying event for next week’s finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Harvick was the favorite to win and started from the pole but an early flat tire made Sunday’s race more eventful than Harvick expected.

He found himself racing late against Stewart-Haas Racing teammates Kurt Busch and Aric Almirola for the fourth transfer spot to Homestead, but Busch was wrecked late and Almirola had to win the race to snatch the berth away from Harvick.

The school announced Petrino’s dismissal Sunday morning with a statement from athletic director Vince Tyra.

Petrino departs with a 77-35 mark in two stints with Louisville.

Matt Kuchar ended more than four years without a PGA Tour victory by closing with a 2-under 69 and holding up through a few nervous moments down the stretch to win the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Mexico.

Kuchar had a four-shot lead going into the final round. But after making two bogeys over the first 67 holes in the tournament, he made two bogeys in two holes on Nos. 14 and 15, and his lead shrunk to one shot when Danny Lee made a 20-foot birdie putt from the fringe on the 16th hole. Lee finished with two pars for a 65. ... Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey is denying a report that says Carmelo Anthony’s time with the team will end soon. Anthony, who was out for the second straight game on Sunday night with an illness, is in his first season with the Rockets after one year in Oklahoma City.

The New York Times had a sourced report on Sunday saying that Anthony has been notified that he will soon be waived. When asked about that report before Sunday night’s game, Morey said: “that’s inaccurate.”
