LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) _ Pitcher Dennis Rasmussen, hoping to return to the major leagues - where he was 91-76 in parts of 11 seasons - pitched a five-hitter as the Omaha Royals beat the Louisville Redbirds 3-2 Sunday.

The 35-year-old left-hander, 9-4 this season in the American Association after a spring training release by the San Francisco Giants, struck out four and walked one. Rasmussen had only one bad inning, the second, when a two-run single by Jose Fernandez gave Louisville a 2-0 lead.

Another former major leaguer, Nelson Santovenia, had a run-scoring double -a liner midjudged by left fielder John Mabry - the seventh, the only run allowed by Louisville starter Brain Barber. He gave up just four hits and struck out nine for the Redbirds.

Steve Dixon came on in the eighth for Louisville and got two outs before a single by Dwayne Hosey, who went 3-for-4. Then relief ace Willie Smith (2-3) came in and gave up an infield single to Glenn Davis before Joe Vitiello’s two-run double proved decisive.

The game, the opener of a three-game series, drew 5,170 at Cardinal Stadium.
