PAOK beats Xanthi 3-0 in Greek league opener
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Spanish midfielder Lucas scored a penalty and assisted on PAOK’s two other goals in a 3-0 win over visiting Xanthi on the opening day of the Greek league Saturday.
Four days before facing Schalke for in the Champions League qualifying playoffs, PAOK dominated the game but had trouble scoring until Vitor’s header from Lucas’ free kick found the net in the 43rd minute.
In the 67th, Dimos Baxevanidis fouled PAOK’s Dimitris Salpingidis in the area and was shown a red card, setting Lucas up to convert the penalty. Seven minutes later, Klaus Athanasiadis finished the scoring with a volley from Lucas’ corner kick. Athanasiadis also had a header hit the post in the 84th.
Also Saturday, Ergotelis drew at Atromitos 2-2 and Veria drew at Platanias with the same score.
