Prep basketball: UHS girls get past Highlanders, 51-49

MORGANTOWN - University outscored Huntington High 15-10 in the fourth quarter and edged the Highlanders 51-49 in girls high school basketball Saturday afternoon.

Ashten Boggs led the Hawks (4-1) with 18 points. Zoe Murphy scored 12 and Selena Jenkins 10. Alezha Turner led Huntington High (3-2) with 17 points. Raven Goodson scored 10 and Madison Slash pulled down 16 rebounds.

The Highlanders return to action at 7:30 p.m. Monday at home vs. Fairland.

WHEELERSBURG 69, SPRING VALLEY 66: Abbie Kallner scored 26 and Katie Darnell followed with 24 to pace the Pirates in a victory over the Timberwolves at Greenup County. The game featured 17 lead changes.

FAIRVIEW 72, MENIFEE COUNTY 62: Garrett Greene scored 23 points and Jay Ferguson snared 11 rebounds as the Eagles defeated the Wildcats.

IRONTON 59, GALLIA ACADEMY 57: The Fighting Tigers built an 11-point lead and held on to beat the Blue Devils in an Ohio Valley Conference game at Ironton’s Conley Center. Ethan Wilson scored 23 and Charlie Large 19 for Ironton (2-1 overall, 1-1 OVC). Zach Loveday led Gallia Academy (3-2, 1-1) with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Cory Call scored 10.

CHESAPEAKE 57, ROCK HILL 36: The Panthers (3-2 overall, 1-1 OVC) outscored the Redmen 22-8 in the fourth quarter to win in Pedro, Ohio. Tylan Hutchison led Chesapeake with 12 points. Eli Blankenship scored 11. Kadin France paced Rock Hill (3-2, 0-2) with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

CROSS LANES CHRISTIAN 71, GRACE CHRISTIAN 58: Brendan Jeffrey scored 24 to rally the Warriors (7-2) to a win over the Soldiers (0-4). Dane Hicks scored 16 and Troy Lowery 12. Ricky Tanner paced Grace with 19 points. Eli Foster scored 18.

IRONTON ST. JOE 91, OVC 38: The Flyers hit a school-record 18 3-point shots and routed the Defenders in Gallipolis, Ohio. Zach Roach made a school-record eight 3-pointers in scoring 30 points. Ryan Payne scored 12 and Max Weber added 11. Mark Oliver paced Ohio Valley Christian with 14 points.

WINFIELD 51, POCA 49: Christian Frye scored 13 of his 19 in the second half and the Generals rallied for a victory against the visiting Dots (1-2). Sean Hanshaw and Zach Simpkins each scored 10 for the Generals (1-3). Freshman Isaac McKneely scored 18 and his senior brother Evan McKneely scored 16 for Poca.

TRIMBLE 49, WAHAMA 37: The Tomcats opened their season with a victory over the White Falcons in Mason, West Virginia. Trimble began the season late because its football team advanced to the Division VII state title game. Jeremiah Brown led the Tomcats with 18 points. Brayden Weber scored 16. Abraham Pauley paced Wahama (0-4) with 16 points.

ALEXANDER 64, MEIGS 53: Dylan Mecum led the Spartans (4-0) with 16 points in a victory over the Marauders in Albany, Ohio. Caleb Terry scored 13 and grabbed 10 rebounds. J.K. Kearns scored 12. Zach Bartrum led Meigs (3-3) with 14 points.

BUFFALO 72, HANNAN 61: The Bison outscored the Wildcats 32-17 in the third quarter to pull away in Ashton, West Virginia. Nate Gibson scored 21, Noah Thompson 19 and Alec Hanshaw 18 for Buffalo. Dalton Coleman led Hannan with 27 points.

SOUTH GALLIA 58, FEDERAL HOCKING 48: Braxton Hardy led the Rebels (3-2) with 15 points and Jared Burdette and Garrett Saunders scored 13 and 10 respectively, in a victory over the Lancers (0-4) in Mercerville, Ohio; Brad Russell paced Federal Hocking with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

WHEELERSBURG 86, NORTHWEST 31: Thirteen Pirates scored in a victory over the Mohawks (1-5) in Wheelersburg, Ohio. J.J. Truitt led the Pirates (2-0) with 16 points. Matthew Miller scored 15, Tanner Holden 11 and Trent Salyers 10.

GREEN 69, SCIOTOVILLE EAST 54: Caden Blizzard scored 23 and Gage Sampson 22 as the Bobcats (4-3) beat the Tartans (0-4). Will Shope scored 25 points and Austin Smith 15 for East.

PORTSMOUTH 50, WHITEOAK 13: Hannah Hughes scored 16 and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Trojans clobbered the Wildcats in Mowrystown, Ohio. Jazmine Eley scored 13 and Nia Trinidad 11.

IRONTON ST. JOE 41, OVC 11: Faith Mahlmeister scored 11 and snagged nine rebounds as the Flyers defeated the Defenders in Gallipolis, Ohio. Kaitlyn Sheridan scored 10 for Ironton St. Joe (3-3).
