NEW YORK (AP) _ Here are the 16 biggest percentage gains recorded by the Dow Jones industrial average since it was increased to 30 stocks on Oct. 1, 1928.

The average’s biggest gain, on March 15, 1933, came as the stock markets reopened after an 11-day shutdown coinciding with the bank holiday ordered by President Franklin Roosevelt.

March 15, 1933 - 15.34 percent, up 8.26 points to 62.10.

Oct. 6, 1931 - 14.87 percent, up 12.86 points to 99.34.

Oct. 31, 1929 - 12.34 percent, up 28.40 points to 273.51.

Sept. 21, 1932 - 11.36 percent, up 7.65 points to 75.16.

Oct. 21, 1987 - 10.15 percent, up 186.84 points to 2,027.85.

Aug. 3, 1932 - 9.52 percent, up 5.06 points to 53.16.

Feb. 11, 1932 - 9.47 percent, up 6.80 points to 78.60.

Nov. 14, 1929 - 9.36 percent, up 18.59 points to 217.28.

Dec. 18, 1931 - 9.35 percent, up 6.90 points to 80.69.

Feb. 13, 1932 - 9.19 percent, up 7.22 points to 85.82.

May 6, 1932 - 9.08 percent, up 4.91 points to 59.01.

April 19, 1933 - 9.03 percent, up 5.66 points to 68.31.

Oct. 8, 1931 - 8.70 percent, up 8.47 points to 105.79.

June 10, 1932 - 7.99 percent, up 3.62 points to 48.94.

Sept. 5, 1939 - 7.26 percent, up 10.03 points to 148.12.

June 3, 1931 - 7.12 percent, up 8.67 points to 130.37.
