Opposition files suit against Moroccan PM

January 9, 2014

RABAT, Morocco (AP) — Morocco’s largest opposition party has filed suit against the Islamist prime minister over remarks implying members of the party are under investigation for financial misdeeds.

The criminal suit filed with the Court of Cassation alleges “defamation” and “the leaking of information on fiscal crimes” and is the latest episode in the fierce battle between the Islamist-led government and the Istiqlal opposition party.

On Dec. 31, Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane was heckled and accused of protecting criminals over a plan to extend an amnesty to those accused of illegally sending funds abroad.

The premier responded by hinting that members of Istiqlal were among those under investigation.

Istiqlal pulled out of the government coalition in 2013 amid a deepening rivalry with the Islamists.
