Three Killed by Tow Truck in California

October 7, 2005

VERNON, Calif. (AP) _ A speeding tow truck lurched onto a sidewalk where a crowd was waiting for a bus, killing three people and injuring eight, authorities said.

The driver was in custody and would face charges in connection with the fatalities Thursday afternoon, Police Lt. James Rodino said.

The truck flung people into the air, scraped the side of a bus and hit two power poles before coming to a stop, Rodino said.

``I was getting ready to eat my dinner and bang! I heard a big explosion,″ said Tom Ybarra, 79, a Vernon City Council member who lives nearby. ``There were people laying down on the street.″

Moments before, the tow truck driver had been involved in a hit-and-run accident in which nobody was injured, according to police.

The deadly accident knocked out electricity in parts of this largely industrial city on the southeast edge of downtown Los Angeles.
