Head of Joint Chiefs Of Staff in Belgrade

March 31, 1985

BELGRADE, Yugoslavia (AP) _ Gen. John W. Vessey Jr., chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, arrived Sunday on an official visit to this non-aligned Communist country.

Col.-Gen. Etar Gracanin, chief of the general staff of the Yugoslav armed forces, met Vessey at Belgrade’s military airport, as did U.S. Ambassador David Anderson and other officials, the state-run Tanjug news agency reported.

Tanjug said Vessey and ″members of the delegation from the friendly country″ would visit some units and institutions in the Yugoslav armed forces.

Vessey arrived from Romania, where he paid a call on President Nicolae Ceausescu. Romania is allied with the Soviet Union but sometimes distances itself from Warsaw Pact policies.
