High school booster support extends beyond sports and music

August 30, 2018

DeKALB – For parents that previously have been familiar with DeKalb schools as room parents or the Parent-Teacher Association, another option to get involved is the academic boosters at DeKalb High School.

The group, which allows people to get involved in student development, is planning three main events throughout the school year, which includes the Academic Letter Award Night in early fall, a late winter Honors Ice Cream Social and the Senior Recognition Cord breakfast in May.

The group also is planning a fundraiser at Chili’s, 2370 Sycamore Road, from Saturday through Sept. 21 to help subsidize costs for the cords, letters, and ice cream, the release said. Smith said in the release that patrons will have to bring a flyer to the restaurant for the donation to reach the group. The flyer is on the DeKalb High School Facebook page.

Angel Smith of DeKalb started academic boosters in 2003 when her oldest son was in eighth grade as another way for parents to be involved with local students. She has continued to support the group since her childrens’ graduation, according to a news release.

The academic boosters meet 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month beginning in September. For more information, contact Smith at Angel.Smith@D428.org.
