Two French girls kill themselves to ‘join’ Kurt Cobain
DOUAI, France (AP) _ Two teen-age girls shot themselves in the head with a .22-caliber rifle after leaving suicide notes saying they wanted to follow the path of the late rock star Kurt Cobain.
The girls, ages 12 and 13, had been telling their friends for several days before Wednesday’s action that they were considering suicide, Jean-Marie Descamp, a prosecutor in this northern French town, said Thursday. Authorities refused to identify the teens.
``The two adolescents seemingly took from this singer a sort of morbid veneration,″ which explained their suicide, Descamp said.
Notes they left refer to Cobain’s group, Nirvana, and to the singer’s suicide, Descamp said.
Cobain killed himself with a shotgun at his Seattle home in 1994.
One of a group of shocked students standing in front of the Victor Hugo high school said the girls wanted ``to join Kurt Cobain, but we didn’t believe them.″
School principal Eric Specq said, ``They were both good students and had no personal problems as far as I knew.″
``We don’t understand this gesture. Nothing in their attitude allowed us to predict such a drama,″ Specq said.
