Dead Candidate Wins Election
EASTON, Pa. (AP) _ A councilwoman who died a week ago won re-election by four votes Tuesday night.
Rusandra ``Sandy″ DePaul, a 10-year veteran, died last Wednesday but was still on the ballot for the West Easton Borough Council. She was one of four candidates running for three seats.
Mrs. DePaul, a Democrat, garnered 104 votes, good enough by four votes for third place.
``The people of West Easton spoke,″ said DePaul’s husband, Dan, himself a councilman and vice chairman of the Northampton County Democratic Party. ``That makes me feel very happy, very glad. It’s a tribute to someone who worked so hard for this community.″
Mrs. DePaul, appointed to the council in 1989, was diagnosed with lung cancer in January and in February underwent surgery for a brain tumor. She was 55.
The council will have to name someone to replace her.
