SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) _ A tornado touched down on the edge of town Friday evening, causing two deaths and damaging more than 100 homes, an official said.

One person was killed in a subdivision and the other was killed when high winds overturned a vehicle on U.S. 65, said officer Robert Mack of the Greene County Sheriff's Department.

At least 20 people were hospitalized for storm-related injuries, Mack said.

Of the more than 100 homes damaged, 20 were destroyed, Mack said.

No estimate of property damage was available.

Authorities were going from house to house in two subdivisions in southeast Springfield to check on injuries and damage, a spokesman for the Missouri State Highway Patrol said. Power lines were down throughout the area.

The tornado passed through Springfield, in southwest Missouri, around 6:05 p.m., blowing several cars off of U.S. 65 and tying up traffic southeast of the city.
